Ideas
for Improvising Edgar Gabriel has created a system to teach improvisation, fiddling and other styles of music not usually taught with the traditional classical repertoire. He calls this "String Groove" which he teaches in courses and workshops throughout the country. Held in a workshop format, this course concentrates on learning styles of music other than classical (i.e. jazz, blues, rock, folk, klezmer, country, Latin). Students learn how to play tunes in the style associated with it and improvise and harmonize over the chord changes. Course work includes ear training and theory in the jazz sense. Students are also introduced to electronic instruments. Until now, there has been very little training in this area for string players, and there is a shortage of violin players with the above mentioned skills that have good tone, technique, and reading abilities.
Edgar also gives workshops for students with one year playing experience or more (Suzuki Book One or equivalent). Professionals and very advanced students who wish to be professionals have also benefited greatly from String Groove. Edgar Gabriel currently teaches String Groove in workshops, semester courses and privately at:
Edgar is willing to travel and will be happy to teach your private or group workshop. |
